And I was depressed before I started clipping tonight....looks like next year I'll be sharing the pet food. Hey you gotta look at like our Prez and those who support him would: You will be so much healthier for it! The eggs are killin' me. $1.99 per dozen. Somebody's using up that corn. Fruits and vegetables will go up because we have had a genuine drought here in Florida. I wish I'd paid more attention to my grandma's gardening and canning instructions. :~( Jatfla hunny, As an old WV gal like me you know about canning! Just get a pressure canner; that is the easiest way. For those of you who don't have a garden, there are "farmer's markets" available. The instruction booklet in the pressure canner has all kinds of recipes and I will give a "To die for" pepper recipe to anyone who wants it; just email me! We do tomato's, corn, green beans, applesauce, venison, apple pie filling, peaches, and pears to name a few. I have my own orchard and I raise my own blackberries (thornless) and I raise my own red raspberries to make a killer freezer jam. I've got the blackberries (Arapaho and Navaoh--thornless is the way to go) and I'm going to try to ... We have water restrictions in Sydney, and they mean there is hardly enough to water the garden. They were introduced when dam levels were at 40%. They decided to build a desalinator, and since the decision was announced the dams have risen to 60% Restrictions remain, while they are determined to prove the desalinator isn't a white elephant. Ironically the place they're building the desalinator has bore water. The only trouble with the bore water, is that it smells like the sulfur they put into natural gas. There will be very few who are making the decisions who will miss a snack, let alone a meal. No doubt the price of organic fuel will rise but as they say at the used car lot. "Cars deserve to be fed before people." My goodness girl...you ARE busy and very industrious! I need so do some clearing in my backyard first. Let's see, you are from Florida, right Jatfla? So the soil should be sandy or red clay depending on what part of Florida. You should able to grow very easily in that soil (as long as you keep it watered) melons, vidalia onions (my favorite) tomato's or any type pepper. Just irrigate and fertilize well. Start clearing! @Pokkets, wow, that is a bummer about the water restrictions. By bore water I assume you mean well water? At my cabin, I have well water and it is sulfur "happy" and I definitely know what you mean! It smells like rotten eggs and we don't run the water enough so that makes it far worse. We have to chlorate all the time. I definitely do not feel comfortable drinking th... Great info, Deb....I don't know why but the price of food in Alaska has already gone up 30-40% in the last 3 yrs. !! Must be the transpo costs. Damn Oil Co's have record profits, tho! So, my kids have moved to Corvallis Oregon and i'm goin' down in a coupla mos.--they love it and found great local farmers markets and will be gardening, too! I will be catchin' and smokin' salmon (while there still are some) like i used to in NorCal and southern Alaska. Yummy! I was having a whinge. The same rain that is filling the dams is watering the garden. Even after 6 months of regular rain, because of the time without it, it is still a surprise, Now when it rains we don't run inside, we run outside to stand in the rain. There used to be a water tank for rainwater in most Australian backyards, maybe a while ago, but the government banned water tanks for health reasons. We found a loophole, when the council gave us new recycling bins, we collected a few old ones (well my brother did) They hold about 20 gallons, and we leave them open, and the rain collects. My Grandmother had a patch in the backyard, where there was always mint and parsley, but what I liked, ... That sounds delicious papanook! I'm still saving up to rent that sandwich I been looking at. *LOL* Bread in UK has gone up 100% in UK over last 12 months. Something about wheat prices. And it is expensive for me to get my oats because they seem to have gone sky high too. |
