Heh - I ran an IT company in college called "Glitch computer services" (the Glitch part was an acronym) and for years, some people simply called me "glitch" on campus. It drove Sara nuts That said, there's so many reasons why it's awesome to be the computer guy. Every day as an IT guy I would solve other people's problems and have mini-victories. Not bad work if you can get it #11: Your constantly responsible for fixing your g/f's step father's computer every time it breaks.. even though it breaks because he keeps going to really bad porn sites and downloading spy/male wear, that somehow manages to get past all the anti-spy/span/male wear crap you've installed. (Where getting past == him disabling it so he can get at the "free" porn). In "fixing" his computer you unfortunately get to see some of his "stash" while trying to find & backup hos real pictures & docs. *shudders* (PS: none of the porn is illegal... its just not something I'd ever willingly look at) ummm...T.M.I. CatWhisperer. lol! Boy do I know what that's like. To most people I'm "the computer guy". To family, I'm "Derek the computer guy". And then you have the friends of friends who know you as "hey, are you the computer guy". I always say no, but somehow they know I'm full of crap... I guess I need to come up with a more convincing NO. My husband is the computer guy. I think he loves it, but I HATE it! We can't go to any family member' house without them filling him in on all their computer woes. 90% of which I do not understand. Then, we spend the rest of our visit with him on the computer coming up with a million things to do, and me awkwardly visiting with the in laws. 5 minutes is never less than an hour, and 20 minutes is usually 5 hours. Everything comes 2nd to the computer and whatever latest version of SOMETHING he is installing (or than uninstalling because it sucked, then reinstalling something else to make his system work right again.) We are always broke and he always has a reason why this is a great job. My... If there was one, my wife would definitely be in it. After the first year or 2 of being the computer guy, I quickly grew to hate it. I know what you mean about family gatherings and such. For the last few years I started giving people like that the cold shoulder but they just keep talking and never learn that I don't want to hear there problems. I can't stand it when they want me to solve there problems while I'm trying to enjoy the little bit of time I get to spend with my family. Anyway, I'm sure he will grow out of it eventually. Just a side note, not trying to make assumptions here, but no amount of nagging will help, just ask my wife. If it's gonna happen, it will happen on it's own. I've been the computer guy for several people, and it really is a double edged sword. Yes it is very rewarding to fix someone's issue, but at the same time it becomes so very frustrating to realize how little about the machine they really understand, especially when you have prior considered them to be fairly intelligent individuals, particularly when the problem is rather minor. Further, it really becomes boring after a while. BTW, did everyone go blind when they found your phone number? See that HELP item in the menu bar? Why didn't you try that? Can you figure out how to pose a question, even a fairly simple one? It really works. GACK! I'm LMAO because I thought I wanted to be the "computer gal." I have 2 friends who want me to help them. I'm just glad when I can figure out what's wrong with our computer. I'm the geek in our family and they get so mad when something goes wrong! It's got to be my fault, because I'm the only one who is taking the time and energy to learn this stuff. I had a programming job in the 8os. It was great. I loved it, but this stuff gets complicated. I wish I had someone I could ask questions to. Good find! I emailed it to my son, hoping that it's not too late for him to keep his computer talents under wraps--except for helping me, of course. And his sister. And his friends. And his friends' parents... This has gone th rounds, but I just read it to my hubby and he laughed so hard and said it's all true. |
