masbury says: Average of $8.70 I'll grant you that gas taxes are a big part of that, but I wonder if healthcare is really the reason. Every single single-payer healthcare plan in existence (and there are many) costs about half or less per person what we Americans pay. And nearly every one delivers equal or better treatment with no one left behind. I'm afraid we Americans have drunk the insurance companies' kool-aid on this one! Maybe take a look at Yes, We Can All Be Insured by consumer advocate Jane Bryant Quinn. Better yet, watch the enjoyable Frontline piece online that looks at other nations' plans, warts and all.... I think Europe probably has more mass transit and smaller vehicles than we do here which is hurting us especially in the rural areas. And lets not forget the driving distances. You bet. My son and I went to Wales a few years ago. Landed in London, took tube to train station and discovered a train for Wales left every hour all day! We traveled by bus (coach) and train and never needed a car. Took a cab only once, and that was when we arrived by train back in London at 1:30 AM. My beloved Iowa now has only one passenger train (goes thru each way each day from Chicago to San Francisco) in its entire 300 X 200 mile expanse. In my little town of Washington (pop 7,000), I'm told there used to be a train every hour. Now, none. I wonder if they were killed off by the interstate highway system. |
