Uhmmm... along with all that I think you'll find that 17,000,000 Russians died in the "Great War". The biggest loss of any country. Don't know how much of it was friendly fire but I think we can put most of it down to Nazism.

Yes, but this is about cold blooded and illegal killing. Such as the gassing of the Jews, the concentration camps etc. The 17,000,000 Russians dying was due to the war and, yes, quite a lot was friendly fire. 'Not one step backwards' if I recall correctly.

I think you're way off on 'friendly fire' sidetrack. Not stepping back was the directive, but vast majority followed it to protect their country, not due to some KGB character pointing a gun in their back.

Cold blooded yes, but as Michael Berenbaum of the Holocaust memorial once pointed out the most chilling thing about the Holocaust was that it was completely legalized. There were requests for proposal and bids on the most efficient ways in which to wipe out the Jewish population. Legal documentation and records were kept. Designs were bid out for the gas chambers. The level of Western European legality is one of the most chilling aspects of the destruction.
