She is the daughter of parents who emigrated from India . She was then raised in Rhode Island where her father worked as a librarian and her mother as a teacher. Her debut work, Interpreter of Maladies, won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2000. Her second publication, The Namesake , was her first novel and spent several weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. In addition to receiving the 2000 Pulitzer Prize, she has also received a PEN/Hemmingway Award, an O. Henry Award, The New Yorker’s best debut of the year award, and an Addison Metcalf award from the American academy of arts and letters.
