masbury says: But the one in the concession speech was a compelling candidate; would she have won if she'd been this way the whole time? Did she lose by trying to be the things that stereotypes say you have to be to win as a woman, rather than being herself? This job is not for female shoulders. It was visible in the end. And she knew this better than anybody. Ironically, Hillary could not see that she was letting herself fall into the classic trap that women trying to get to the top do - a certain amount of riding a famous husband's coattails. She needed to "find her own voice" at the very start of the campaign, NOT in the middle of it. She needed to distance herself from her husband's legacy and establish a separate Clinton identity. Indeed, Hillary did all the things that stereotyping suggests female candidates need to do. But had she simply been herself, as she was in her elegant, convincing concession speech, I wonder if she would ever have lost. I never heard that Hillary till then. As to this: This job is not for female shoulders.I am astonished, and I could not disagree more. An exceptionally gifted politician's and adorable stateswoman's historical speech. America, you ARE blessed. |
