I'm very happy to see IBM trying to make its new data center more environmentally friendly and applaud them for doing so.

But c'mon now, the stats about taking 5,800 cars off the road and reducing 31,799 tons of carbon dioxide are completely misleading.

If you're building a new data center, your putting more servers into commission, which is using more energy and releasing more carbon dioxide - period.

What they're basically saying is they're going to add 10,000 cars to the roads, but instead of adding 10,000 SUVs or full-size sedans, they're adding 10,000 Toyota Prius cars.

In other words, they're reducing their emissions compared to if they would have created a less efficient data center.

Again I completely applaud their effort. They would have built the data center anyway, and the fact they're making if efficient is great. But keep it real with your press about it.
