The ice cap was about 12.5 square miles in 1889, based on a rough survey. In 2003 it was just over 1.5 square miles. Some have pointed to this melting as a sign of global warming. A new article in <A target=" n" href="http://www.americanscientist.org/template/AssetDetail/assetid/55553/page/1"><EM>American Scientist</EM></A> suggests this is not the case. </p> <P>Researchers Philip W. Mote and Georg Kaser confirm that glaciers at the mid-latitudes have been shrinking due to atmospheric warming, but they say that the glaciers on Kilimanjaro - located just 3 degrees from the equator - have shrunk for different reasons, probably unrelated to AGW. In fact, most of the shrinkage occurred prior to 1950 and the most probable explanation for the changes have to do with reduced snowfall and increased solar radiation.</P></blockquote></div><div style="margin: 0px 6px 6px 4px;"><table style="font-size: 11px;border-spacing: 0px;padding: 0px;" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tr><td style="background:transparent;border-width:0px;padding:0px;"> </td><td align="right" style="background:transparent;border-width:0px;padding:0px;width:107px" width="107"><a href="http://clipmarks.com/share/3A8BE0C3-3273-4E66-933F-3C0DFFA7C723/blog/" title="blog or email this clip"><img src="http://content8.clipmarks.com/images/c2b-foot.png" border="0" alt="blog it" width="107" height="17" style="border-width:0px;padding:0px;margin:0px;" /></a></td></tr></table></div></div>
