I don't think it serves either the parents or the child for the parent to try to build up a child's ego by being dishonest about the child's talents. That form of "lying" can lead to more self-delusion and not being honest with oneself.

Years of teaching also showed that many kids totally believe their lies. Often the biggest problem is helping them understand what actually happened.
