Hmm .. if we take out the English arrogance -) This clip is not about the evolution of English but about the evolution of human written language, in which english is a temporary impermanent communicative occasion, like all of us .. at large .... I went to the original site and got a map of area codes in Georgia. This isn't so much the English alphabet as it is the Latin or Roman one, and it's used by a lot of other languages, too. The problem is that English has around 33 distinct phonemes (that's sounds, to the non-linguists out there) but only 26 symbols to represent them, thus causing the infamous irregularities in spelling that plagues people trying to learn the language. |
