This clip is not about the evolution of English but about the evolution of human written language, in which english is a temporary impermanent communicative occasion, like all of us .. at large ....

This isn't so much the English alphabet as it is the Latin or Roman one, and it's used by a lot of other languages, too.

The problem is that English has around 33 distinct phonemes (that's sounds, to the non-linguists out there) but only 26 symbols to represent them, thus causing the infamous irregularities in spelling that plagues people trying to learn the language.
