blueridge says:
Christmas was not observed in America until the 19th century, largely due to German immigration in the North. The Pilgrims (like the Puritans) said that anyone who observed Christmas could not be a true Christian, that it was a pagan and Popish (Roman Catholic) practice. Wherever Christmas was observed (Rome, England, France) historically Christian protestants were persecuted, because they denounced both the Mass and the so-called "holy day", which they considered a gross superstition. No one back then ever used adorned trees, which was an incorporation of ancient pagan customs above, for Christ-mass in the Romish churches. It did not become a federal holiday (establishing this religious pagan custom) until the 1900s.

The Pilgrims were right, its Christianized paganism. That is why children always ask their parents why they have a tree, and always get the most creative answers, to justify the ritual. But the historic roots of the custom are very clear. Dec. 25th is Baalism.

I think it wonderful that there are so many traditions wrapped up in one month. People from all over the world are involved in similar activities.
The down side is that religions can't bend a bit and make it a celebration for all, no matter their beliefs.

(Israel was in captivity because of idolatry already, for God is not partial). The Babylonian empire was short...

For some, putting up a tree and decorating it every year does indeed make them happy, for others they need to go onto the internet and insult other's beliefs because they aren't the same as their own. It takes all kinds.

The publishing of facts need not be insulting, but it is often troubling. And some who accuse others make no hesitation to insult themselves, frequently on the internet.

Insult actually comes from pride which does not like to be humbled, a consequence often of telling the truth. But It should not be insulting to lay out the facts of how a practice came about, and mature people are able to deal with it. Some are unable to. The facts are plain in this case, and it is actually insulting human intellect to believe lighting of trees has any logical effect, power or purpose, or to attempt to deny it is superstitious foolishness. And it is blasphemy toward God and Christ to say it has anyt...
