crdz9802 says: So true....My favorite point is number 5. Seems like Christian-bashing has become a fad. That is pretty spot on around here. Christian bashing seems like the in thing to do. So remember how many like to say that Thomas Jefferson wasn't a Christian? Check this out. Pretty good read. I love this! Here are my answers. Why do the same atheists seem to harass, poke and prod at believers? And then get mad when they return the fire?It probably seems like harassing and poking and prodding when you've had a free pass for so long. I'm just trying to make it a topic that can be discussed. It has been a topic that wasn't allowed to be talked about for a long time. The getting mad part happens on both sides of the argument. Everybody has what they feel is solid evidence and nobody is listening. Why do you think some atheists post questions when they seem to think they already know the answer and then proceed to ridicule and make fun of people of faith who have given the... Christianity has never had a free pass. Actually that is "bullying." So many times people clip stupid articles just to cause Christians to speak up and when they do so they proceed to call us names. The fact of the matter is that unless you are perfect you have no way of knowing whether or not there is a God. Even with that fact you continue to call us idiots and morons. Until you become perfect I will continue to believe in Him. Oh and you didn't answer the last question. By free pass, I meant that religion was always a topic that was never discussed. I could make a statement like 'Hillary Clinton is the best leader this country has ever seen. Sexy too.' (I don't believe that) I would expect someone to say something to me with a different opinion. Should I then complain about Hillary bashing? A comment like 'Jesus was born of a virgin, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven', should be open to the same criticism. I agreed with the bullying. I'll ignore your comment about being perfect, because I think that's a weak argument. I didn't answer the last question, because it wasn't a very good question. http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/802C1097-AB9D-4C21-BECE-1F38247347AF/ Challenging a religious theology does not mean the practitioners are being called morons and idiots. It means they're being subjected to the same critique from others that they are used to doing TO others. That is, IMHO, what is meant by Christians having previously had a "free pass." They're not as used to having the theological debate turned towards them. A strong faith is able to answer questions. If a question hits a nerve, then you need to look to yourself for the problem. <<That is pretty spot on around here. Christian bashing seems like the in thing to do.>> Remember what Christ said about being hated for His sake? Kinda of goes with the territory. <<They're not as used to having the theological debate turned towards them.>> Spoken like a true non-Christian. <<A strong faith is able to answer questions.>> Er...nope. One's ability to answer questions is not a determination of one's spiritual strength. Take for example a child....they often have strong faith, but lack the ability to explain it. << If a question hits a nerve, then you need to look to yourself for the problem.>> The problem? Hmmm. That's very interesting. You know what I find even more... I think this is a bit of a non-issue, I mean the clipping here is a one-sided view of what should be a civilised discussion about theology. Not every atheist is a christian-basher and not every christian is open to debate about their faith. So bullying is bad either way, and I believe there are guilty parties on both sides, and putting this clip up here is inviting an argument and is just as bad as those you are complaining about. Er...nope. One's ability to answer questions is not a determination ofThe faith itself should have sufficient, tangible material to draw from, regardless of whether every person is old enough to explain using it. why are non-Christians so eager to seek out Christian discussions.Same reason that Christians keep answering us. Because it can lead to dialogue and learning for both sides. Why do you want us to avoid Christian discussions? Discussion is good. Christian bashing sessions (which happen here frequently) aren't productive at all. Agreed, n2sooners. Far too often, however, challenging any aspect of Christian belief is taken as "bashing" rather than the critical thinking it was meant to be. Most sects of Christianity seek to "spread the word." I've been preached to, talked down at, insulted, and yelled at by various evangelizers through the years. Often, the loudest of these were the ones that embodied the least of their own teachings. I'm usually an extremely even-keeled guy and I certainly respect everyone's right to believe whatever they want to believe. That said, if someone really feels the need to get in my face and tell me why I'm going to hell, I don't see it as "bullying" to state my opinion in return. All of the "Christian Bashing" is Bigotophobia. It seems that bigots are the one group in society that it's still OK to discriminate against. 80% of the country is pushing its beliefs on us and WE are the bullies? odd reasoning, whenever Atheists stand up for our rights it is considered "bashing". most of us are in the closet for fear of persecution in our daily lives by so called loving religions so we take it to the only place where we can feel safe talking about our non belief-the internet- but i guess since we don't really use our constitution anymore I should just "chill" before W passes a law making it illegal to be Atheist. **steps down from soapbox** Clearly There is an issue with religion bashing in the world today. When someone attacks someone elses belief it can get pretty bad. Some people don't want to change their beliefs no matter what anyone says. From our level of intelligence as a species this turmoil over belief systems is expected. We are but children attempting to understand quantum physics. Our intelligence levels are still restricted from the greed, selfishness and fear that not understanding our place in the universe has presented. The world is only 6000 years old if you look at it from the civilization point of view. Science knows that carbon atoms decay at a certain rate and can fairly accurately date the rocks and art... Since to have a religion there must be a consensus of like-minded people it is understandable that as far as religion is concerned the earth is only 6000 years old. Every year there seems to be a new discovery that supports things stated in the religious documents. There are multiple versions of like events in different documents that can be proved by science. Cold reality of the universe creates a scientific structure of the observed conditions that occur in the realm of matter. The mechanics of the universe cannot disprove the possibility of a non-material essence in creation. The fact that life can develop concepts of religion even though it is composed of the mechanics of the universe... Since no one knows the truth then both sides are wrong and both sides are right. Given the rate at which science is revealing the nature of the universe to us it makes me think there is still a very far ways to go yet. Religions are based upon the foundation of the knowledge at the time as is science. It is all subject to change. Religion is just slower at the change because of the passions the rule the people that created the abstracts. Science has been wrong a lot. It keeps re-visioning itself as its understanding grows. Religion is more stable in its concepts but it has to re-vision itself as well. The context of the principals in religions are explained by recounting the deeds and conc... If the ideal is way off base you can deal with that concept by disregarding it completely and there is no issue. But when the challenge is believable or makes sense it stands to destroy your version of your beliefs. Rather than accept this new ideal you attempt to reason it away. If you cannot then you are faced with either restructuring your belief system or disregarding the information. When you restructure you feel a loss of ideals you hold dear and it causes stress. If you ignore the new ideals that make sense you force yourself to continue with beliefs you know cannot be right. This causes stress. It doesn't matter that the ideals that you must reconsider are correct, they make sense to... Consider what we may become if we incorporate the fundamental good from each belief system. Working together we can raise our awareness. Some things cannot be explained, some things can be explained. What? No comments? You've given us something to think about, skwirl. I've wondered why we couldn't just take the best of everything and improve life for everybody. Sounds simple. There are so many things we don't understand about life, who we are, how we got here, the universe, etc. Maybe we aren't suppose to know everything. Keeps life a mystery that will never be solved. Belief systems must be ever changing and adaptive to the circumstances that surround us. If you lock yourself into one belief or another life will leave you behind. Belief is kinda like love - its passion changes from moment to moment. Locking yourself into a belief without compromise will leave you bitter and defensive. Bitterness and Defensiveness when coupled with an aggressive upbringing can lead to extremism and hatred. I wonder if anyone has done a study on the correlation between extremist groups and aggressive childhoods? I wonder how many phobias extremists have compared to people that are easy going? http://www.phobialist.com/ That is an A-Z list of phobias and what they fear - Interesting Agateophobia- Fear of insanity. Allodoxaphobia- Fear of opinions. Anglophobia- Fear of England or English culture, etc. Angrophobia - Fear of anger or of becoming angry. Anthropophobia- Fear of people or society. Apeirophobia- Fear of infinity. Astrophobia- Fear of stars or celestial space. Ataxophobia- Fear of disorder or untidiness. Atelophobia- Fear of imperfection. Athazagoraphobia- Fear of being forgotton or ignored or forgetting. Automysophobia- Fear of being dirty. Autophobia- Fear of being alone or of oneself. Cainophobia or Cainotophobia- Fear of newness, novelty. Cardiophobia- Fear of the heart. Catagelophobia- Fear of being ridiculed. Cenophobia or Centophobia- Fear of new things or ideas. Cherophobia- Fear of gaiety. Coimetrophobia- Fear of cemeteries. Well it is apparent. But I'm not just referring to belief in religion. I mean any belief. |
