With W's approval rating hovering in the low 30's and 65 to 70 percent of the US citizenry believing that the nation is headed in the wrong direction, I finally get to say it.

Hey conservatives, Why don't you move to France!

I don't think the rest of the world hates America nearly as much as the far left here in the US does.

Sooners, the sad thing is that you are right on target. It has become de rigueur on the left to trash the US.

I interact with a lot of internationals, as does my father, and I can say with a fair amount of certainty that most internationals do not hate America but they are dumbfounded by the fact that the US could vote, not only once, but twice for George W. Bush.

Once the US returns to more competent management (which could easily include elements of the Republican party) you most likely will see a different attitude. Especially if those individuals are true statesmen who can work with other countries instead of "my way or the highway" policies.

Better be careful. The French just might start moving here!

Just for contrast, I see much mention of the elections in Germany and France but no mention of all the elections in Central and South America where the populace has moved to the left.

You can say it with TOTAL certainty. Absolute total certainty. His only ability appears to be obtaining campaign funds. And this gives him the right to export democracy? People in glasshouses...

The ultimate tragedy of America is that we don't live up to the idea of America. Perhaps this also breeds much of the resentment of America found internationally. Many Burmese pray every day that America will bomb their country and destroy their government, bringing them democracy. Charles Taylor originally offered to dismantle his dictatorship in Liberia under the condition that the US army occupy the country and oversee the transition of governments. In both these cases America is the hope of the oppressed, but we turned a deaf ear to them and instead engaged in this shaky nonsense in Iraq.

If America made a strong and consistent commitment to true nation building, I think that we would e...

ouyangwulong -- A note on your side note:

"I often wonder how some people claim to love America, but hate... immigrants..."

Conservatives have no issue with immigrants. In fact, most of us are descended from immigrants

What we want to get rid of is the illegal aliens. There is a vast distinction between the two. If you want to partake in honest discussion of that issue (though this is not the forum for that) you _must_ make that distinction. It is dishonest -- and common -- to pretend that "illegal alien" and "immigrant" are synonyms.

P.S. -- I'm a conservative and an atheist. i am not, however, an anti-theist.

True that. Also imagine if most of the people who came to the U.S. entered thru, say Florida, North Carolina or Boston and not Ellis Island. Melting pot would be an understatement as your family history would be next to undocumented.

That is a surprising comment from you Ouyangwulong. This country is built by immigrants and continues to be sustained by immigrants. The fat, lazy, welfare robbers are the ones detested.

I know of not a single person that dislikes immigrants. In fact, I want more immigration from south of the border. I want the system streamlined so immigrants can come in more quickly.
I also want the border sealed and intruders shot.

Just because some nations have elected conservative leaders does not mean that they are pro-Bush. In fact, many of these leaders are nationalist that seek the the interest of their leaders first, others second. If anything Bush has found Center-Left leaders more malleable because of their willingness to bend backwards to accommodate the U.S. (NuLabour in Britain a clear example, although it has divided that party internally, and Howard is an exception on the Conservative side)

The Left-Right divide does not have the outside the U.S. as it does within it. Also you forget the Center-Left/Left revolution in the Americas (with the exception of Chile, who although technically Center-Left, its st...

To clarify, I believe that there is significant anti-immigrant sentiment. And I don't believe that I said that was confined to conservatives. I believe that intolerance is a separate phenomenon, which can be equally manifested among liberals or conservatives. In fact, liberals who presume that they do not discriminate often are the sources of some of the most obstinate discrimination, and some of the longest-lasting.

I am with you all on the issue of illegal immigration. I believe that illegal immigration is fundamentally wrong not just because it breaks the laws, but because we have these laws for a reason: to protect people, whoever they may be. Illegal aliens are exploited by smugglers, ...
