Chances are very good that they were drinking Sprecher Root Beer. Sprecher Brewing is a very successful Milwaukee micro-brewery founded in 1985. Their root beer is a very highly acclaimed product and is sold widely in the region.

I think the kids get an A+ for ironic ingenuity.
