debbyski says: WV is the only state that allows snake handling. Help me Jesus I live here. That photo looks fairly old, but it doesn't really matter. I don't live in W.Va anymore but I would choose my Grandma's faith over what is put *out there* as faith today...any day. I have learned that the passage that deals with snake-handling in Mark 16 is not found in the most original documents. It's amazing to me how much information can be found on the internet (and elsewhere) that makes all us Christians appear to be a bunch of idiotic fools. Frankly, if I believed this stuff, I would never have accepted Christianity. Extraordinary selective 'logic'! Well, that's faith. Pick out the bits you like and change the bits you don't. If, as a supposed good Christian, you desire the end of the world so god can kill off the Jews of Israel, then besides being totally anti-Semite, surely you must mad or bad! Certainly not sound or good. Yes, mad and bad. Snakes wouldn't be in it with that crap. Yes lets all be Christians. Lets join Jim and Tammy Fay Bakers group. No wait, they were corrupt. How bout Jimmy Swaggart. No he likes hookers. Maybe this guy Haggard. No he likes the muscle guys And I really mean he likes them in a deep way. Ok, Lets join the Jim Jones revival. I hear they are having a party, and you wont need to bring drinks. They are supplying the Koolaid. I will follow Jesus' example by talking to the serpents, not playing with them; Mt 23:33. He only played with sinners; Mt 11:19: Lu 7:34. Those who handle serpents must also lay their hands on the sick a heal them; Mk 16:18. Jesus did not temp faith, He is the author and finisher of our faith; Heb12:2. I have met people and attended their services and found that they bvelieve there is a war against satan at this very moment. These people are in the 'At War' mentality and cannot be reasoned with. A while back I saw a very detailed and in-depth documentary (on BBC, if I recall correctly) regarding the pictured group. It was a relatively recent film, perhaps even post 2000. Clearly, I recall the man pictured as being in the film. One man's poison... Bartending, Years ago there was a news reporter who was doing a piece on a group of snake handlers in Appalachia. While doing the piece he actually became so mesmerized by the group that he joined and didn't leave the group or finish the article for quite a while if memory serves me correctly. I found that utter fascinating. I watched a documentary called "Hillbilly" on the history channel last night Jatfla and there are still 40 churches in the Appalachia's that snake handle and of this date, WV is the only state that has not outlawed it. http://www.library.appstate.edu/appcoll/manuscript/coll116/serpent.html I think you would probably enjoy the program "Hillbilly" Jatfla; I know I did. http://www.history.com/shows.do?action=detail&episodeId=240119 "If, as a supposed good Christian, you desire the end of the world so god can kill off the Jews of Israel, then besides being totally anti-Semite, surely you must mad or bad!" I've read some very strange and/or radical stuff from you, but this takes the cake. If, as a supposed good Christian, you desire the end of the world so god can kill off the Jews of Israel, then besides being totally anti-Semite, surely you must mad or bad! Certainly not sound or good. Yes, mad and bad. What? @jatfla I can appreciate where you're coming from on this. Picking and choosing which parts to believe and which not to belief is certainly fair game. After all, everything in every "god's word" is not going to appeal to the rational or to the moral person. Contradictions abound; murder, rape, pillage and plunder ordered by god. It's enough to make a moral person wonder how you could ever tell a god from a devil. But there is one way... You keep to your moral sense of right and wrong, REGARDLESS of what the bible says, and regardless of what others say as well. Some people can't do that. Like these snake handlers. But I can appreciate those who can. You would never kill a bunch of inn... |
