invictus says: A highly controversial point by Howard Zinn. I'd really love to learn what our fellow American clippers think about a possible "New Deal" after the elections. Interesting to me is how our view of a successful economy has changed. The New Deal put people to work to combat the depression. Now, as we move into Recession, the gov't hands out checks to encourage consumption. We've moved from work to consumption as that which we see as economic necessity. In that climate, I'd be surprised if any kind of work corps will be coming to the table. Maybe in Obamanation...but i'll not hold breath. It just did not take hold in the US because of an almost religious individualism, which has disappeared a little in recent decades. The idea of the New Deal was based in the same model that Mussolini used to advance his State machinery. Roosevelt and Mussolini had a mutual respect and Roosevelt even bragged that they were implementing similar programs. Roosevelt was a keen observer and also great admirer of Woodrow Wilson, who in his book The State pretty much outlined th... Of course today the rallying cry for social action and mass mobilization is not as likey to be for war-socialism as it is for some healthcare, diversity, environmentalism, or some other sham. The leap that occurred from the point of 1776 is not an accident. No new deal needed. Just less authoritarian mindset among the ignorant masses that are too incompetent to make it without Mommy-fascism. But we should also not forget what the New Deal was. The New Deal was an entire new set of assumptions applied to the Constitution. Where the Bill of Rights outlined what the State cannot do, the New Deal outlined a set of criteria about what the State owed the people and what the expectations would be of society in return. This was a pendulum swing away from American Libertarianism toward the Italian Fascist model. Businesses and corporations were already in the fold because of the massive paradigm shift that occurred away from taxing corporations toward the new income tax that each citizen was initially responsible for.
