"This girl she screamed, ‘No, stop it, leave me alone,'" Evans said.
..and yet nothing? She was *still* raped? With 60 people on the bus and a bus driver? Something is very amiss here!

I don't know but the last two paragraphs of the article could provide a hint....

"Bond said he missed the incident. Police said no other students tried to stop the assault.

Detectives are still investigating. They plan to further question Bond and interview students. Others could be charged."

I don't think America has the market cornered on shameless conduct.

More Americans that not would find this activity deplorable and would not have allowed it to happen had they been there.

I may not have faith in this twisted government but I do have faith in the human spirit of most people.

I AGREE BNM.

I for one am getting tired of us having such a shitty image worldwide. I really and truly want this to change.

It is obviously a horrible situation. I will not, however, point to the driver as one who should have been on top of the situation; to see it and stop it without doubt as a part of expected job performance. The demands of safely handling a bus in traffic of any volume are enough for any individual without having to provide an on-board security presence at the same time. There should always be two adults on-board anytime there is anywhere near a full bus.

I know. Let's hear the cost objection. So, what is the safety of a bus-load of children worth?

yes. it is. very sad. something even more distressing i found was [in ohio at least] a "what happens on the bus stays on the bus."

This is shocking! I can understand the bus driver not noticing the incident given how many other factors require his attention to drive the bus safely in traffic, stay on the proper route, make certain the kids stay seated, etc. But why did no other child on the bus stand up for the girl? Were they too afraid to intervene since it was such a foreign and adult situation? (I know that some children have a tendency to shy away into a shell when confronted by adult topics or situations with which they are not familiar and have not been taught about.)

But still. Why didn't anyone try to intervene? Didn't any of the surrounding kids consider that saving the girl from this assault and rape might b...

Over there @ Newsvine I'm hearing people blame the bus driver and, though I understand the feelings of wanting to blame someone... I think it's irresponsible.

The bus driver has to navigate an 11 to 14 ton vehicle with a long body through roads, stop lights, and over railroad tracks and bridges, with 60 kids - who, at their quietest, are not quiet.

Add to that he now has to be responsible for making sure every person in their seat is behaving - AT THE SAME TIME - s/he is trying to navigate these children safely to their destination? That is just not possible.

I would not only want - but EXPECT - any bus driver to give 100% attention to the ROAD and the happenings going on around the...

OK, so the driver had his eyes on the road - and maybe he'd grown accustomed to students screaming on his bus, who knows? But what were the 60 students doing, huh?? Why did no-one try to get help for her?

MORE not ALL??
i seriously think it is time for Americans to take a look at the society they are creating and exporting to the rest of the world.
crowd psychology excuses us from acting in defence of our peers - since when?
has america become a nation raising chickens or schizoid children?
when i grew up, the code was protect the weak.. all boys knew this together we enforced this.
IT SEEMS THE NEW AMERICAN CODE IS DON'T GET INVOLVED. survival of the fittest - the jungle law
