The REAL Napster
Out of curiosity, what is the rate worldwide? I have a feeling its higher than the U.S. rate.

First, Real Napster, note that the US report is actually an old one, 2000.AD. I likely just jumped on it because i'm now faced with relying on the medical profession yet again here in Vietnam, where, yes, i too definitely expect the "rates" to be much, much higher.

And it is RELATIVE rates, not absolute numbers, we should be looking at. Some searching found: "up to 30,000" for the UK (2000) [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/682000.stm], "As many as 24,000" for Canada (2007) [http://www.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/bodyandhealth/story.html?id=b66618c9-3831-4b2a-9761-dad8ae00afda]; "Some 1,700" for Holland (2004) [http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2007/04/medical_errors_kill_1700_a_yea.php]...

80,000 — infections in hospitals 10
106,000 — non-error, negative effects of drugs 2
I don't see hospital-acquired infections as caused by doctors. Many if not most of these could be due to the fact that people naturally harbor bacteria and a sick or injured person is more likely to be infected by the bacteria living on his own skin.

Non-error, negative effects of drugs also cannot necessarily blamed on doctors. If you give a drug to someone who has never taken it and he dies from an allergic or other unforeseen reaction, who is to blame?

P. S. - I am a nurse.

Come to Africa. If our criminals don't succeed in nailing you, our doctors will finish the job.

To DeeDeeNP, wish I could remember where I saw the study, but hospital infections come from doctors/nurses/nursesaides/orderlies coming in contact with patients and the simple thing of washing hands was not done between patients. Yes, sick people withe weakened immune systems are more prone to infections, but the study stated that the simple measure of always washing hands between patients could drop the infection rate of a hospital dramatically!
