Reason has a good post up discussing the rise of the Euro-Right. Moynihan dismantles a number of misconceptions by Left-wing pundits desperate to present the British National Party as a phenomenon of the Right.

Here are some good posts about the BNP by Daniel Hannan. For instance:

"BBC presenters keep calling the BNP "far Right"? Nick Griffin's acceptance speech: He wasn't going to talk about immigration policy he said, since everyone knew where he stood on the subject. No, his priority was to expose the way in which public assets had been privatized. Look at the BNP's manifesto: it wants nationalisation, subsidy, higher taxes, protectionism and (sotto voce) the abolition of the monarchy. And look at where its votes came from. The BNP is a symptom of Labour's collapse."

"The rise of groups such as UKIP, BNP, Plaid Cymru, SNP and the Greens is merely reflective of how out of touch Westminster and the parties have become. The fault for the election of the BNP lies squarely with the Conservatives, Labour and the Lib Dems. Voters may not fully understand what/who they vote for but they will vote for someone who listens to them. That is all the BNP did in this campaign. In these enlightened times it is difficult to believe that there are nearly 3 million racists in Great Britain, as this Channel 4 survey shows ."

Much of the time when you see American journalists make references to the "Right" in Europe, or "Conservatives", it is intended to be negatively applied to the psyche of the American public as having some equal standing as the Right in America. The problem with that is that the Right in America are historically Libertarian and the conservative principles applied are those of Constitutional preservation. The thing that bothers me about European politics is that they are in the Statist paradigm for good. They have no standard of Libertarianism or Jeffersonian Democracy. The heritage of liberty in Europe stems from the French Revolution, which is wholly statist and recognizes NO individual, ina...

I have been thoroughly confused about British politics - right, left, center. I finally went through a few articles tonight after reading on the BNP.

Here is a comment I made on another clip about the concept of the terms 'liberal' and 'conservative' and the reality of their meanings. They really have no meaning. There really isn't that much difference anymore. The spectrum is

Statist/fascist<---------<A----<BC>-------D------>Anarchist

A= Progressive/fascists

B= Liberals

C= Conservatives

D= Libertarians/ where our founders started.

It is the same, as I see it, in European politics. Both the Left and the Right are very progressive. There really has never been an American style libertarian movement in Europe of which I am aware.
