Cielerella says: Kevin Carter took this photo of a starving baby stalked by a vulture, then walked away. 3 months later he committed suicide, as well he should have for being such a HORRIBLE HUMAN BEING. And I'm sure you've gone and saved hundreds of babies in your lifetime. Miktar - As a matter of fact I HAVE saved hundreds of babies...nay MILLIONS of babies - BY NOT WALKING AWAY FROM ANY STARVING ONES WHILE THEY WERE BEING STALKED BY VULTURES!!! By the way miktar, if you can't think of any better comments to leave than the one you did - just go ahead and put your face under the toilet water and remain there til dead. Thank you very much. So we bomb and kill 10's of Thousands of innocent human beings, many of who are also infants. Do you need to see it on TV or in government censored photos to get a clue? Is this child any less innocent than the ones we kill on purpose? Some Christian said, "we get our morals from god." But we can all feel for this tiny innocent human; so why can't this benelovent god of love and mercy? (Write excuses here ________ .) AcesLucky - Do I not have a clue? I'm a bit befuddled by your comment and who it's aimed at... If you're saying I shouldn't feel outraged by the atrocity of the photographer snapping his photo and then leaving the child to die because there are so many deaths I should only shed a tear for all simultaneously or none at all - well, that just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. It would be ridiculous for me to try to list all the sadnesses here whilst trying to show this one as well so I'm going to assume that's not what you meant. Judge not, and you will not be judged. (Let the universe be the judge. Have compassion for those who do wrong, for we all do wrong, and we all need compassion. Still the angry heart, smile, feel the love, and know that we are all ok. Awww Pepelomoko what a sweet sentiment! How's that life motto workin' out for ya anyway? You luvin' up those murdering child rapists too? That's gooood. Someone needs to love them afterall. We'll all let YOU do that. You can be the ONLY one that feels compassion for the photographer profiting from and walking away from that baby's misery. Afterall, we all know that with such sugary God fearing words spewing from your keyboard you MUST be right...and me and the majority of the world wrong for hating those scumbags. Yeah, I'm sure God has a special place picked out for you. A special place indeed... Reality Check needed at counter 5. Internet Righteousness spill. Something thinks they're a hero for posting a picture. Why would I think I'm a hero for posting the pic?? I'm outraged by the behavior of the photographer. Why isn't that clear to you? Why is this topic so confusing to you? Is EVERY topic this confusing to you? Keep proving my point. It makes this easier. I take solace in the fact that I'm not some American hypocrite who likes pointing out when other people make mistakes, yet don't lift a finger to actually do anything about the situation. You disgust me more than the person who didn't help the child (who was beyond help at the time the photo was taken, just so you know). Miktar - I am doing something about the situation; I'm using this page to help to spread the news of the terrible misdeed. What are you doing with your page? Oh...yes...I see, you created it three days ago, posted nothing but one foggy forest photo so far, so that you can spend all your time harrassing people on their pages because they're taking stands, showing opinions, speaking up. And praytell how can YOU know the child was beyond help? Did you examine him? You seem AWFUL defensive about this whole topic. Did you by chance let a baby die too? Did I hit a soft spot? *LMAO* No, seriously. It's falling off. I can't stop laughing. You are a fucking moron, stop trying to act superior just because nobody's there to bitchslap the stupid out of you.Lordthor, I'm in love with you!!! *LOL* You are my hero of the day!! (I hope you're not offended having ano old dyke worship you) Oh...my. what a doll. Keep up the good work, kiddo. You made my morning. We are noone to be judging the photographer for not helping this baby girl. Thats not our job...Our job is to send the message around that he may have not helped, but we can surely do so... instead of sitting in front of ur computer criticizing everything u see or read...Many many more children like that baby girl, die everyday, every hour....and many more other problems are affecting our society, we should try to help! A picture like this should make us reflect about our society. Instead, it makes people insult each other. People, dont you think we should be thinking on what to do to help society...The problem is not what is happening, but instead its the fact that we as members of our s... Journalists at the time were supposedly warned not to touch the famine victims for fear of disease. The child did get up and walk away. Quite frankly, kudos to Kevin for having the bravery for take that photo, likely knowing what criticism he'd face, in order to show the world what was happening. Eyewitnesses report the child moved away. And even if Kevin had been able to give the child food, someone who is starving is often unable to hold down even the smallest morsel. The child - all those people - needed special medical care in order to get nourishment that would have helped. But we would not have known at all except for photos like this. Ah, yes, the defensive emotional posturing that accompanies "I have nothing actually productive to add." You win the Flounce Award for today. Wiccan you're a moron. It's easy. Man finds starving baby being stalked by vulture. Man takes snapshot of dying baby. Man walks away. Man profits from photo. Bowels of Hell open up and swallow man. I understand the anger at the photographer's non-action, but what do you feel he should have done about the other starving children he would have been walking over/past on the way to any aid? Would the world have known of the overall atrocities had the photo never gotten out? How many more would have died unnoticed had the world not seen this graphic image. He was already in hell, and paid with his life. Get off your own high horse, give up your own creature comforts, and go over there yourself. Otherwise, all we can do as human beings is the best we can under the circumstances. Unless you were there personally, you have no idea how/why he made the decision he did. Wiccan I don't need photos to inform me of how wicked the world is. "Get off your own high horse, give up your own creature comforts, and go over there yourself." I don't need to go "over there" to see evil either. I can find dying babies right here, abandoned in garbage cans. And I guarantee you I pick every last one of them up and get them the help they need. You're just disagreeing for attention. It's completely retarded to say that he wasn't wrong for what he did. Why don't you go get some real life attention and stop trying to argue? You know you're wrong. You know you're stupid. You know you've lost. I never said he wasn't wrong. What I'm trying to give attention to is the idea that unless we were personally in the situation, we cannot know the complete set of circumstances that led to his ultimate decision. He himself, in the end, was unable to live with that decision. To villify him is pointless. But taking the photo did a greater good in the long run for the majority, even if the decision of the moment was not the best one. LOL. When you can present reason, I'll be happy to view it. hehehe. If I was in it for the attention, I'd have popped the clip so more people would tune in. omgstfu Wow, I can't believe it's been a decade and the urban legend is still going around. The photo is real, won a pulitzer in 1994 and the photographer (Kevin Carter) committed suicide 2 months afterwards but all that stuff about walking away and leaving the child to the vulture is simply not true. There are other versions of this story where excerpts from Carter's suicide note is forwarded along with the photo. Again, not true. Do a little research before publicly condemning someone. The original posting is bad enough but everyone else in this string who believed this story without question contributed to the negligence.... @ Cielerella: Unfortunately, we can't expect all of those who use Clipmarks to be decent people, as so many of the comments here demonstrate... Thank you for posting this; it reminds us that "pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." It's good to take time out once in a while to reflect on such things, to the end that we may do better ourselves when the opportunity to do so presents itself. It is sad to think that such a little effort might have made such a big difference in this kid's life. JK27519 - on what basis do you find this to be an urban legend? Did you just pluck it from the sky to make your comment look better? He admitted it you freaking moron and HBO would not have been able to do a documentary. A documentary is based on an ACTUAL event, era, life story etc., that purports to be FACTUALLY ACCURATE and contains NO FICTIONAL ELEMENTS. Where was this mans humanity? Here's one for all you non-judgementalists - a main factor of our evolution is that we have empathy, something this particular homosapien did not have. IT IS BIOLOGICIAL YOU DUMBASSES! I hope he was answerable to the child when he got through the pearly gates, that's if he isn't stuck in suicide limbo! The documentary was critically acclaimed and won various accolades. Where was this mans humanity? From what I have read, journalists at the time were warned not to touch famine victims for fear of disease. What was he to do, besides chase the bird off (which was done)? He had a young daughter at home that needed him too. We can only imagine the anguish of being the recorder of history, and not being able to step into certain situations. He committed suicide soon afterwards, so obviously his humanity was deeply affected. This is my photographer husband's take on it. "What did he do? He could have, perhaps, saved one child instead of taking the photograph, and the world would have been more ignorant of the plight of Sudan. But he took that photograph, which woke up millions of people and sent millions of $$ of aid, etc to the starving people who would otherwise have been left to die because no one knew what was going on. Ask the people who are saying, 'what a horrible person,' what THEY are doing to alleviate the suffering, right now. You know what they're doing? Sitting on their comfortable, well-fed asses passing judgment on the person who actually WENT there and made the world aware. Ask them what t... I've seen this photo before and was compelled by it and also by the caption which stated the photographer just left the scene after taking the picture. And now of course there are countless comments on the internet about how horrible he was for doing so. The fact is, most of us have no idea what really went down. I found one article where Mr. Carter's travel companion who was at the scene claimed that in fact the child was not crawling to some food distribution center (which makes sense, how does a toddler this young know about a food distribution camp in the first place....did she read a flyer?). The child's mom was in fact close by trying to get food from a food station (not seen on th... POP for Wiccantexan and the others who made reasoned comments without pronouncing judgment. I don't want anyone to jump down my throat for this, but it seems to me as if this is an important picture. Some may say that it's too graphic. Obviously, but I think that it is bullshit to belittle this picture. Yes, it is a bit grotesque, yes it does show human suffering, but what else are you supposed to do? Pick up the little diseased child, get the disease, come home with the disease, and spread it everywhere? Or do something productive, show the tragedy, make the tragedy known, and have professionals fix it? Utilitarian ethics dictate that you have to do the greatest good for the greatest amount of people. Sometimes you do have to take a step back and let events play out. I can ... He was told by officals not to touch anyone for fear of desease. He dedicated his life to showing what was going on in the world, and placed himself in combat situations. I think that whether he had a lapse in judgement or not, he deserves a bit more respect. @wattupfruitcake: 1: This was posted in 2007. You're a little bit late on the insults there, genius. 2: Seriously, learn to spell. I could hardly understand what you were blabbing about. 3: "nigga"? The poster is white, and that doesn't even make sense. 4: You are absolutely retarded... you posted 6 times in a row, when you could have posted that all as one comment. That is beyond stupidity. 5: It's "cielerella". Not cinderella. Learn to reason. 6: You whine because she's a "bleeding heart"? If you think it's a bad thing to care about, and want to help spread the word about a kid dying of starvation, then you're the one who's a prick. 7: Your opinion is no more valid than hers. I... Sore spot? Sure. My sore spot is morons who can't speak english properly hurling insults at someone who is no longer here to defend themselves over a topic posted 2-3 years ago regarding something they know nothing about. That's my sore spot. Let the baby rest in peace? If that's what you want, why are you still posting this crap when the topic died years ago? What are you talking about with the e-harmony thing? I am not the original poster, i just think you're an idiot. Oh no, a bunch of retards who can't speak english and can't formulate a thought into one coherent post, let alone 6 were "slamming" me (by which I assume you mean the original poster). I seriously doubt you had a "r... I'm not "slamming" retards, I'm "slamming" you. You go ahead and report this post all you like, it will just lead them to seeing your vulgar tripe. The rest of your post, I could hardly understand because you don't appear to be very good with the english language. I'm assuming you just rambled nonsensically like in your previous 8 posts. Unless you have something NEW to say, this will be my last post while I look forward to your account being moderated for your vulgarity and stupidity. |
