invictus says: CNN's report on Second Life. The fastest growing "virtual world" has more than 8.5 million users (and counting) while the daily cash traffic is around 1.5 million US dollars. Despite the disadvantages of the summer season and some technical problems about maintenance and scalability, Second Life keeps on growing every day. This autumn, a new "boom" is expected with "voice enabled" SIMs and new "sculpty prims" technology. Second Life really is a horrible world, VERY laggy, and takes a very strong computer to run smoothly. The avatars are ugly and robotic. User content allows people to customize their avatars in disgusting ways ie: multiple sexual organs and the ability to place them ANYWHERE on the body. I don't want to play a game where a guy can walk up to me and chat while wearing a penis on his forehead. If you're interested in a Virtual World, check out www.there.com instead. Second Life is incredibly over-hyped. It has over 8.7 million registered members, but the number of active users is closer to 600,000. It's not very intuitive and in recent times it has had to deal with issues such as tax free commerce, distribution of illegal pornographic material, online gambling and other unsavoury activities. Both above comments reflects a prejudice. I have been using Second Life since last October and what I witnessed was more than fascinating. Some notes: * You don't need a "very strong" computer to run Second Life. My 2 years old P4 3 Ghz PC with 128 Mb Nvidia graphic card works very smoothly. * There.com is out of question. It's not comparable to SL in usability and scalability. I also tried it last year and found it "pathetic". * "Customizing avatars in disgusting ways"? Even though I have not seen more than a few such freaks in SL in my 10 months experience, I believe this has nothing to do with SL but "people of the net who use it." If you open your eyes enough and look for the right pl... I also tried SL, and I beg to differ regarding the system requirements. I was only able to stay in world for 15 mins or so before my computer crashed because the program was too much for my year old system to handle. Another thing I like about There over SL is that when my wireless goes down, I can still play the game (including the VoIP voice ability) on my back-up 56K dial up connection. Both games have their own merits, but I prefer hoverboard racing over pixelated whore houses any day I gotta add here, I usually agree with you, invictus....I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. We each have our preference...LOL |
