"It would be a mistake to idealise traditional animal husbandry as the standard by which the animal-products industry falls short: traditional animal husbandry is brutal enough, just on a smaller scale. A better standard by which to judge both practices would be the simple standard of humanity: is this truly the best that human beings are capable of?"

I agree completely in regards to the way we treat animals
on an industrial scale, as objects rather than our fellow creatures that do indeed provide us with food, and as you pointed out as products we use- I don't however see any way to get the current industry to treat animals differently. The problem is that the population is at such a huge scale that feeding the masses is such a huge industry by necessity that what are the options available? I for one am all for the ehtical treatment of animals, yet I am unwilling to sacrifice meat as part of my diet- so what should a person like me do to bring about some change in the way these creatures are treated?

Those who abuse the animals are amassing much bad karma.
Ever hear of an animal with bad karma?

This is a none debate. Life, as we know it, requires sustenance. It doesn't matter if it is plant, animal, or insect (or whatever group of living material you devise). Until we can churn out 100% synthetic (and healthy) food sources its all about survival.

If you give into pressure groups for animals then you will only face pressure groups for plants, or insects, or fish, or whatever. Life sucks for someone or something at any given time. You are either the eater or the dinner. Someone is always going to point out the unfairness of being the food.

Quit eating then if it suits you. I'll continue to enjoy my steak, eggs, fish, and grown foods.

Of course, intentional cruelty is unacceptabl...

As humans we are the animals voice. If we are cruel to animals it just shows the world that we do not care about others or their voice. Although people do not need to stop eating to not be cruel, knowlege is a great thing and with this knowlege there are ways to help animals with out not eating. For example, there needs to be a law against killing animals for fur or animal testing. This does not benefit anyone. Overall, animals are just like people without voices so why not help them. It is just cruel to ignore this problem.

There are two different issues here and I think that there would be those that would try to blur the distinction in order bolster their own position (I do not imply that any person here is doing that directly, merely pointing out that there is politics on this issue). The two issues being abuse of animals and the predation of animals by humans.

I do not think that consumption can validly be argued. It seems to me to be a simple personal choice. I wonder if it would even be possible to feed the world if all meat eating were to halt - and do fish and insects fall under "meat" as they are mobile living things as well. But then, as I mentioned above, who would then "speak" for the plant world? ...
