For perspective, the Anglo-Saxon period lasted for 600 years, from 410 A.D. (the Fall of Rome) to 1066 A.D. (Battle of Hastings). I read elsewhere that among the gold decorative pieces found were Pommels, gold caps that fit over the handle knobs of swords. It is supposed that Pommels were removed from enemies swords as a kind of war trophy. The value of the gold, though substantial and increasing in value as world currencies decline, is trivial in comparison to its historical value because so little is known about the settlers from the German regions of Angeln and Saxony who gave us the language we speak today.
