BigBadWolf says: I love this kind of image. these are wonderful! My favorites are the topiary, the gnarled trees, and the final misty grove. Other than that I find them pretty much pretentious and derivative of other works I have seen. I will grant that they are art, as they do provoke thought, but not all art is good art. The photos do show good technical quality, but art requires more than good technical quality and momentary novelty to be good art. I wouldn't put them in the MoMA, but as an aspiring amateur photographer myself -- whose skills are atrocious -- I respect what this guy is doing, and I'm popping this anyhow. BartendingBear: Your comment reminds me of something I've thought about a lot lately. I am starting to think the Internet has opened up a space for a new "intermediate" class of artworks that aren't groundbreaking and aren't museum-quality, but that are interesting and creative nonetheless. Think of stuff you might come across on Flickr. Though most of it is fairly forgettable, I can't help thinking that it's a good thing that people can and are encouraged to do this kind of stuff and to share it online. I never claimed any of these to be true works of art. Not all of us are art critics and are just as happy with an interesting photo vs. a true work of art. Quite frankly I find some "true works of art" quite ho-hum in comparison to what a lucky amateur might have shot. And, just as enbar has said, the internet allowing newcomers to display their latest works has opened up doors that normally would not exist. Since everyone's going on about art: I really like the photos, all the technical aspects of them; the composition, subjects and the like. Some might call them original, some might not. Everyone's open to their own interpretations, especially when following a favoured artist and they mimic their work. I know nothing about art, and just as little about photo's but I do know that I love B&W pictures! Thanks BBW each are truly one of a kind. anyone know of where to get a hold of rodney smith prints/ posters? Thanks |
