Jaycer17 says: The last time I clipped religious questions there was quite an interesting discussion. Let's see this time. I honestly don't go out of my way to create a stir, but I do understand that reiligion is a touchy subject. I think that questioning your beliefs --and then confirming them-- is very heatlthy for your faith. The answers give in this site are very interesting, whether you agree or not. I honestly don't go out of my way to create a stir.Mmm hmm. Suuuuure. They are interesting questions and the discussion of them on site is good. I am surprised I found myself looking through the site and bookmarking it. Must be something worth seeing to overcome my knee-jerk reaction of 'not another of the thousands of churches claiming supreme ownership of Christ'. Oh come on, jstates1, you should know... don'tcha? Well, I'll start....(and maybe end with it :~) Sin is anything contrary to God's *revealed* instructions in the Scriptures. Example: First sin = the woman's failure to obey God's commandment not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good/Evil. Disobedience = sin. Church that Christ Built: The word church = "assembly" in the Greek. It is comprised of any (Jew/Gentile), who believe that Jesus is the Messiah/their Redeemer. I have been kicked out of Bible studies, ask to leave, and worse just for some of the questions I have ask, so I will try to refrain from this discussion as well. It wasn't like I was trying to be odious, I just had questions... Good clip! Here's a question that should be added: What happens when God's Creation (the universe) does not agree with (man's version of) God's word? Men cannot change or "rewrite" Creation. The laws of physics, astronomy, chemistry, electricity, etc..., the laws of Nature, man is "subject to" and cannot change. Man can, however, change God's word every time scripture is written. Various scriptures and various version of each, all written by men all claiming to be god's word. The written word of god (we all know) is written by man (inspired though they may or may not be). God's creation, however, is not altered by man and is as pristine as the day of creation. When the written word ... Sin is anything contrary to God's *revealed* instructions in the Scriptures. Example: First sin = the woman's failure to obey God's commandment not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good/Evil. Disobedience = sin.Interesting that this doesn't actually answer the question, "What is the Bible's definition of sin?" -- It defines sin, but doesn't actually cite a Biblical prooftext. Re my previous comment, the more I think about it, the more pointless. argumentative and stupid it seems, so please ignore it. So, Enbar - is there a verse that defines sin? I remember "the one unforgiveable sin" but as for sin itself - can't conjure up that one. Well, according to this site, I John 3.4 defines it as "the transgression of the law." That's not quite right; the actual Greek word in that passage is "anomia," which is more like "lawlessness." (The Greek word that's usually translated "sin" is "hamartia," which in ancient Greek literally means "missing the mark" -- in NT Greek it takes on different ramifications that aren't well understood.) "Sin" doesn't get defined in Genesis, though. The Hebrew word for sin is "pesha" (closer to "crime" or "rebellion") and I don't know much about the etymology of it. If you read the story of Adam and Eve's fall in Genesis, though, you may be surprised to find that the word "sin" appears nowhere. enbar...I was only using the *first sin* as an example...as the defining first incident of disobedience to a direct command from God. Wouldn't you place that under the description of "rebellion"? Very good translations of 'anomia' and 'hamartia'. Another translation: 1Jo 3:4 "Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; indeed, sin is lawlessness. (NET) I have been kicked out of Bible studies, ask to leave, and worse just for some of the questions I have ask, so I will try to refrain from this discussion as well. It wasn't like I was trying to be odious, I just had questions...One threatened not to marry me in his church. I didn't back down. Many clergy get/got off on minor bullying. We had no further problems after that junior confrontation. I'd boarded with Jesuits, the top end of the Catholic church, so was well capable of debate with him and not easily intimidated. I like those questions....It's fun that they don't have definite answers, only speculative ones |
