years away in the constellation Gemini. It is the remnant of a
supernova that exploded around 30,000 light years ago.
' 5 000 light years away', I get, as it's a measure of distance, but then shouldn't it be simply '30 000 years away' (this being a measure of time)?

That is correct, it must have been an oversight on the part of the author of the article, with the editor obviously not having a clue what it was about.
