masbury says: And changed Africa into a food importer "Racist, social government in Africa"??? Is there something called "The African Government"? --- Masbury, very important clip, thanks for sharing. I think Smoke TNT perfectly captured American ignorance in regards to rest of the world. While we're on the topic, the farm subsidies provided by the US and EU actually make it cheaper for some countries (like Egypt) to import food rather than buy it from their own farmers. Sohil, perhaps you don't realize it but you are painting me and many other educated Americans with the same brush you've used, rightfully IMO, on Smoke TNT. Sigh. It seems that all too often the rest of the world lumps all Americans in with the vocal ignorant ones. IMO it would be more accurate for you to have stated I think Smoke TNT has demonstrated his ignorance in regards to the rest of the world. Sohil, it usually is the case that US grain, which is subsidized by the US govt, is cheaper than locally grown in most countries. Thus, when the WB/IMF insist that countries needing their help do away with import restrictions, farming collapses, since farmers are unable to compete against subsidized prices. Eventually, of course, the worldwide price rises, and with no farming left, nations are forced to buy the imports at any price. Haiti is a good example - another country which used to be an exporter of food. Mexico, likewise - and most Americans don't realize that illegal immigration is related to the destruction of the Mexican family farm by American subsidized crops. Smoke, as invictus implies, you're talking about Zimbabwe, and I'm talking about most of the other 52 African nations. It's a big continent. invictus, thanks! Sorry, ginge. Ya I agree, I was out of line in that comment. My apologizes. But my comment was directed towards the more "ignorant" Americans. I would disagree with the author in one regard: I don't think the diversion of corn (maize to you UK types) to biofuels is a cause of food scarcity. Corn grown across the midwestern USA today is largely inedible by humans, having been hybridized into low-protein form for rapid cattle weight gain and production of corn syrup. Returning to edible crops and reducing consumption of meat would have a huge effect on food availability. And at that point, diversion of corn to biofuel would have a direct impact on food supplies. Apology accepted, Sohil. I knew that you didn't mean me! I think I agree with smoke. Whatever government on the continent of Africa you're talking about, I'd say it is the fault of corrupt government that is hitting Africa so hard. Economically, socially, and agriculturally. Well, that's quite a bit exaggerated, but there's a root question that's critically important: Why is that? Not that long ago, every nation in Africa was claimed by a European power as its colony. Europeans forced Africans off their farms and into production of raw materials for European and American industry. Then when market prices fell, Europeans got the light and went home, leaving a vacuum of power, money, education, and expertise that opened the door for corruption across the continent. Africa was raped, and corruption, like a wolf, almost always follows powerlessness. We in the West have built our nations partly on wealth stolen from Africa. Their hunger, the corrupt regimes that... Agreed. Our forefather definitely abused them. The basic philosophy of the corporate interests which dictate the policies and methods of the world bank and the WTO is to keep the people poor, stupid, and powerless. If the poor have potential, introduce the gun. The holder of the gun is irrelevant. The poor are told they are exactly where they deserve to be. The 'ignorance' of the U.S. citizens that is often implied to be a natural characteristic, is a result of the same basic policy as that which is keeping many 3rd world countries third world. These 'vested' interests, are setting the American People up to take a fall. The plan being to vanish during the collapse, and allow history to condemn the messengers. The greatest element we have... Wow, pokkets, good one! |
