Diesel subs are very quite and the waters of the straight are by definition fast flowing with competing currents that degrade sonar performance. I am not surprised by this item at all.

The Chinese knew where they were. Probably wanted to see how much of a surprise it would be. The area was just off the coast of China, where they should have been expecting a Chinese sub to be.The only other place one might have been was up surprising the Russians.

you never know what 2 expect from this great mysterious sub-marine life ....
