masbury says: The US model - long held to keep unemployment at a minimum due to lack of workplace regulation - is falling behind that of many European countries. I wonder if some of this is caused by our labor unions, unemployment benefits, Social Security and Welfare. Why work when the government will pay your way? And, if you do work, why not get paid 5 times what you are worth because of a labor union? Also, what about our educational system? It is so enmeshed in labor unions and political correctness, that our children are getting a poor education unable to compete in the world markets? What about our taxes and regulations on business? Are they eating up the profits so that companies cannot afford to hire? Are we spending our money on "global warming"? We have long since been not competitive with most countries and we are cont... No one said Capitalism isn't volatile (well at least no one educated on the subject that I have read or heard), it is, and it comes with pros and cons as does anything else. But in my opinion the pros far out weigh the cons. jay - you missed the point completely - European systems have more protection of labor, better social protections, more protection of individuals from predatory businesses - yet they have better healthcare, healthcare for everyone, higher productivity, lower unemployment, fewer bankruptcies, lower abortion rates, shorter work weeks, no college debts, and happier populations. When will we ever learn that these mantras of ours about free markets leave us less free, poorer, sicker, dumber, and sadder than our European relatives? The "American Dream" is unavailable in America. Please report to Canada, France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, Norway or the Netherlands for your "American" dream. Why in the world are you guys still living here then? Why not follow your "dream". Already am, silly-pants. I just don't like to see Americans being treated like a serf class. I like a large number of Americans, and I know they deserve better than current-day America. In my case, jay, because this is my home and, like most humans, I love my home. In fact, I love it enough to want it to be what it could become, rather than ignoring its weaknesses and letting it founder. |
