I am having a memory lapse, but there is a specific kind of stinging small jelly fish that in Hawaii and I am sure many tropical areas , comes in huge numbers right off beaches -- something like 10 days after a full moon in Kona. Often they will close beaches when its really bad. I have seen many people stung and it will make the most macho man cry, or at the very least ruin your vacation or following week. Makes a huge purple mark, and is very very painful.

I think it's either the Portugese man of war or the Box Jelly. I got hit by a man of war once - the pain was intense for a long time!

The little one might be a "blue bottle" (we call it that because it is blue, I suppose) They clear beaches and pack a good sting - one long string like thing that causes a good dose of pain. We use methylated spirits ( the drunks around the beach will share) on the sting; cheap and effective.
