Thank you, Willhelm. My blurry eyes misread the original text. We already know and have beaten to death the fact that atrocities are are committed stinking of religious conviction. I just think it's poignant how he writes men do evil "cheerfully" as a result. Cheerfully.

It is certainly in line with human nature which he cites in his quote " All men naturally hate each other". However, you may be reading too deeply into the word "religion" in this quote. If I am not mistaken the actual quote speaks to conscience, not religious conviction.There may have been some restating along the way. I'm not really sure. Or, that could all be in my imagination for some reason. Perhaps some clipper knows the timeline and source of that quote.
