because of language and insurance barriers, many Asian-Americans aren't particularly likely to seek professional help.Having worked performing mental health assessments in an ER, I saw my fair share of Asian-American patients. I just wanted to mention another factor at work here. Often Asian-American patients will rely upon "herbal concoctions sent from home" to treat their symptoms. Being part asian american myself, I'd like to submit another potential reason why mental illness goes untreated. Cultural influences within and between asian races often keep us from seeking help for ourselves and even for others. It is thought of a shameful to have a mental illness and is often covered up. |
