Yes, although i'm surprised they'll let him considering they already know she has cancer. Wow, tough all the way round for that family.
My heart goes out to them.

He certainly deserves a salute.

He might want to hurry. Two years ago Tricare began pushing to severely limit coverage for pre-existing conditions among dependants. I have no idea where that effort stands today, but they'll eventually win what they're after. They've gotten every other cut they've asked for so far.

How cruel is it that a guy would have to abandon his dying wife, risking his own life, when she needs him the most, simply because we haven't the courage to provide universal health care? He shouldn't have to make this decision, and he wouldn't have to in any other industrialized democracy.

What the hell, it's the very least he could do for the woman that shared his life.

If this was his only option, and it appears that it must have been, he should thank God that there was a solution to his "never-gonna-go-away-gotta-pay-the medical bill" problem.

He's not only leaving his wife, he's leaving a teenage (14, I think) daughter - at a time when parental presence is critical. This shouldn't be his only alternative. If what cjartists said is true and it happens, those responsible should be flayed. It's a good thing this guy was still within recruiting age.

When this guy enlisted, he also enlisted his wif'e's pre-existing condition into a Universal Health Care System.

Someone said that if we had Universal Health Care that he wouldn't have to enlist.

Quite the opposite is true, if he wanted the best Universal Health Care there is, that's exactly what he had to do - ENLIST!

If you want to dance, the Piper must be paid. His dance is his wife's Health Care, the Piper is the creditor he agreed to pay, up to and including his life, in return for the music.

At a time of our nation's highest unemployment rate, actually around 20%, the military is not hurting for recruits.

This guy was lucky that he got in when he did, before they become more selec...

Wait, the only way you can get good health insurance is to enlist? And you think that is a good idea?

This just shows that the current system is worthless, because you are paying for something that fails the moment you need it the most.

He thinks it's a good idea otherwise why would he have joined. No other company would hire anyone with a built-in drain on the insurance premium like his. He found someone willing to take on a very expensive proposition in return for his service, the United States Military. I bet his cancerous wife thinks he made a good choice.

Whatever is in the 1,052 pages of the Health Care Bill, I bet it's not offering the same deal as the real Public Option - the military: No co-pays, no deductibles, no denial of coverage or treatment, pre-existing conditions welcomed.

The only way that I can see a Universal Health Care that will satisfy the majority, is to conscript the entire Health Care Industry.

Or get rid of it and start fresh. Of course the army has a bit of a problem, it requires you to kill or be killed and considering the current conflicts, that is not a good idea at all.

As for the "load", people tend to buy their insurance when they are young and healthy, then get dumped by the companies when they age. Extremely unfair to say the least.

Did the possibility that he felt that he had no other alternative other than watch his wife slowly die from a treatable disease cross your mind?

What about:

The US Army and Marines are signing up more felons in an effort to overcome flagging enlistment, the AP reports. The Army doubled its recruitment of felons last year and the Marines upped theirs from 208 to 350—in...

Of course. If you were faced with only those two available courses of action, which would you choose. We're dealing with "What is" here, not with non-existent options.

By the way, the article you referenced, was published Apr 21, 08 at a time when unemployment was low, and few volunteers wanted to serve. It's a whole new ballgame now, now that unemployment is around 20%, and no new jobs are in sight.
