Tonight on BBC TV, I saw film of a beautiful sight. It was a new type of caesarian birth, 'assisted', I think it's called, in London. It took over 3 minutes from when the babies head appeared. He took his first breathed under his own steam, in his own time and sat up! The mother was awake and could see everything. It all seemed extraordinarily relaxed.

Contrast this with a child with a narrow pelvis, impregnated in a gang rape. Marriage prospects are virtually zero, the child will probably die after days of excruciating pain, and she will be incontinent for life, if she lives.

Deliberating succeeding in infecting someone with AIDS is comparable. A totally unchristian fundamentalist notion...

Is your concern actually for the issue you raise? Or some other agenda? By the stark and shocking detail you hilight I sense it is your own aggression and frustration you are expressing. If the issue of these women was your true concern I'd think you would be researching what agencies have stepped up to fill the gap, what progress HAS been and is being made, and that equal funding was sent to similar international aid groups for women's reproductive health and care.

Not only the extent of the problem (over two million women worldwide) but also the underlying causes; lack of medical care, lack of education and status for women and girls, early marriage, etc.

One By One is working to end obstetric fistula in multiple ways. First, they provide direct financial support in the form of grants to several organizations that provide treatment for and help prevent fistula in the developing world. Second, they work to educate the public (people like me!) about the reality of fistula and its causes and, very importantly, provide ideas on simple ways that individuals can make a difference. And third, they work to advocate for changes in public policy that could help to bring about an end to fistula. If you are interested in learning more about this issue their website contains a lot of information and has links to a number of other organizations dealing both with fistula and related issues.

Also, if you are a registered voter in the United States, you might be interested in learning about a current piece of federal legislation that would provide funding for fistula treatment.
