Allison Van Dusen says: Just when you thought that the craze over carbs was over, the LA Tiimes is reporting that the food industry may have found a new angle to dwell on: the health benefits of carbs with 'resistant starches'. Found in navy beans, green bananas and whole-grain breads, these starches contribute to the production of fatty acids and colon health. They may also help lower cholesterol levels and aid in weight loss. The only problem is you may have to eat a lot of these foods to get the health benefits. Pass the bread! No surprise here. I never understood the zero carb thing. I get the idea, but really, have you ever met anyone who could survive that "life change"? Frankly, everyone i've ever known who cut out carbs and lost weight, ultimately put the weight back plus more...with one exception. A carb free lifestyle is fantasy. I agree, cutting out empty carbs is good, but the ones mentioned in the piece have a place in any diet. One more thing, if folks simply made an effort to eat their carbs - especially valueless ones - in combination with some form of protein, they would blunt some of the negative effects of them. |
