When I was a work-study student at Indiana University, Bloomington, in the early 1970's, the professor I worked for put a poster with that same anti-war slogan on his office door, inside our laboratory. One morning soon afterward the grad students and I entered the lab to find that someone had proudly embellished the poster with the defiant words, "The janitors will be there!" The sobering realization hit that there were people in our world who didn't understand the message and therefore would not allow peace to be waged instead of war. The Army doesn't sufficiently care for the troops by proper rotation, they keep extending their tours, which will cause severe battle fatigue and PTS. The Marines rotate the troops and don't extend the stays, but there are only so many available. I think we need to let them all come home and keep ourselves out of other people's business, unless we are asked to come to someone's aid. |
