Not too long ago, I read " Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why by Bart Ehrman. He had a lot of cogent things to say about how both specific wordings and general meanings of passages, chapters and even whole books were changed over the years, both deliberately and inadvertently. Some things were changed to conform to the ideology of the place and time; other things got changed because a common means of copying manuscripts in ancient times was for scribes to listen to a copy being read out and mishearing words or paraphrasing the text to keep up with the recitation. Archaeology will improve Christianity. As a Christian, I'm actually quite looking forward to this. Your headline was a little misleading, though. How can 'the rival to the Bible' be... the Bible? Now I know it's the rival to the Bible AS WE KNOW IT. It will be interesting to see if this clears anything up or just adds controversy. |
