It's common among those who awaken to realize they have shed innocent blood (i.e. unjust war, civilian collateral damage, etc.). They often went mad or committed suicide. Another portion of it is the equivalent to post-traumatic stress syndrome, memories which haunt due to fear and horror.

It is a false compassion that puts all responsibility for the depression of soldiers back on America, as if they are not responsible for their own unconditional commitment to act as pawns of an unjust military war machine, as if they are amoral creatures to serve the desires of Empire....

Prove to me that they were defending the United States, or the Constitution (as they swore)--instead of unconstitutional neocon war-mongers--and I will change my mind.
