Lexica says: Click through for the whole thing. More: Rape culture is treating straight sexuality as the norm. Rape culture is lumping queer sexuality into nonconsensual sexual practices like pedophilia and bestiality… Rape culture is rape being used as a weapon, a tool of war and genocide and oppression. Rape culture is rape being used as a corrective to "cure" queer women. Rape culture is a militarized culture and "the natural product of all wars, everywhere, at all times, in all forms." Rape culture...is an ugly thing. Rape culture is the way in which the constant threat of sexual assault affects women's daily movements.Another mother and I were talking about rape statistics last week. We were at a play date with 4 first grade girls. The statistics I remember say 1 in 4 women will be raped, but I think with under-reporting that percentage is even higher. Women know what I'm talking about. We looked at those sweet little girls and the horror that at least one and probably two of those little girls would experience rape in their future was appalling but true. One of the many competing etymologies of the word fuck itself is that it's from a word that originally meant to "strike". |
