They call defeatist one who is barely tolerant enough to say they don't like religion but there's not much they can do about it. They call for radical extermination, battles,indoctrination. Plans openly call for knowingly disregarding parents teachings and countering them at earliest opportunity, at the youngest possible age, and telling them their parents are lying to them.
This involves schools and government and their goal is to work from these positions to go all-out, not be gentle or tolerant, and eliminate religion from society in full.
With such an agenda, imagine the punishment for praying, speaking, even thinking religion!

So if there is an analogy, look to the new ultra-militancy the atheists want to go to totally exterminate religion. No one has ever tried to exterminate religion without laws, persecution, abuse, and fascism.

His book Darwin's Dangerous Idea is about application of the idea of evolution to fields of inquiry other than biology. His recent book, Breaking The Spell: Religion As Natural Phenomenon is an attempt to describe the development of religion in evolutionary terms. Dennett is, of course, a man without a theology.
