The Drobo is a unique hard drive enclosure that can house up to four hard drives and create a single drive out of the combined sizes. Unlike traditional RAID drives, the hard drives can be any combination of sizes. In the event of any one of the hard drives failing, the remaining three hard drives have back-ups of all data.

For its second iteration of the Drobo, Data Robotics has concentrated on improving the speed of the device. To this end, next new Drobo comes with FireWire 800 and FireWire 400 ports, alongside the USB 2.0 sockets found on the original solution.
