Definitely what I've always believed- I've only believed in assigning home reading [getting students to do some reading at home], optional spelling practice, reviewing for tests, and finishing projects that they had some class time to do as well. If a student has been away, or is going on vacation, catch up work is a good idea, otherwise piles of worksheets with no reason makes no sense whatsoever.

Homework interferes with family time. Just one of the reasons we homeschooled.

current research shows homework provides no benefits to younger children, may not even help older children, and in contrast to popular belief, does not reinforce what students learn in school

As a student years ago, I have to say that math homework was really the only subject in which I benefited from homework. I think some amount of repetition is necessary to make it 'stick'. As a math teacher years later though, I didn't give nearly the amount of homework I had been given. I really only gave HW on the concepts that I felt needed to be second nature, like multiplication tables, for example. I definitely see some benefit to homework as far as critical thinking problems that need to be done alone by each student in every subject, but those are not a daily occurrence.

I despised homework through grade school and parts of it in college. Either I understood a concept and the work was redundant and boring, or I didn't, in which case I needed to study, not repeat exercises I already knew how to do.

Advanced courses in college brought more project based assignments and a freedom to define my own curriculum, a freedom which I pushed to the limit

I wish I'd known to do that in HS, i probably would have gotten a lot more out of it, and felt a lot less guilty about constantly missing assignments.

A a teacher of teachers, I am constantly encouraging them to reduce the amount of homework that is assigned. The sad truth is, many of the students can't do the work at home, and few are lucky enough to have a parent or older sibling around to help. This is of course only after all the chores/babysitting/after school work/sports are finished.

I only liked homework because I could do it. Sadly that was only for maths, French and English. Physics was brutal.

I always thought homework itself really wasn't so bad. I must say that language and grammar skills are going down the drain though.

you need homework on maths anyway.
