A good friend of mine collects old maps. He's going to love this site...

While not a collector, i think it's fascinating to see how the world has evolved by looking at the way maps have changed over time. I wish that when i was growing up more emphasis was placed on this. It's one thing to read about change, but to actually see a map pre and post major events really puts greater clarity on it (at least for me).

I have always loved the historical maps. I think a series of a good drawn historical maps tells us much more things than an average textbook. You see the land on it, the major cities and towns, the neighbors of that particular civilization, its national resources and the immigrance routs towards the region. Then on the next one, you see how things had dramatically changed in a century or so. Maps give a clear view of changing trends and the effects of major events in history - a very good companion for history books.

The first historical atlas I've ever seen was Hammond's historical supplement for the World Atlas. I was 9 years old then and fell in love with the magic of the ancient history...

Agree skwirlinator- certain things 'guys' just do- -lastly i would agree we Egoldstein that maps are very cool- my grandfater was from a small town in russia that has long disappeared between all the changes in the soviet union-- when he came to the USA he was very young and adopted his hometowns name as his last name-- one that means a great deal to me-- i enjoy finding old maps and seeing what is now my family name on them- 'the guy'

Thats a pretty Kool story, Guy.

When I was younger I had a map from each of the 50 states. I sent away thru the mail for them.

I once had a beautifully illustrated historical map set of the American Revolution. It was a series of 3 or 4 maps and the illustrations, side notes, textual supplements etc were great. Unfortunately I lost the whole set (or a friend borrowed it and "orgot" to bring back) when I was in high school. Can't remember the publisher or illustrator's name.
