Man-made disasters are short in public memory - I guess we must do everything to jog public memory to snap out of their comfort zones. Probably a bit sadistic, but does the trick?!
On the other hand, nothing much can be done about natural disasters (although initiated by man - deforestation, pollution, etc) it somehow gets the desired sympathy of people and nations!
