More of the continuing evidence that our intentionality, our freedom to act, our justifications etc. are post hoc rationalisations, narratives. The continuing script of our identity is ontologically separate from our unconscious sources of action, orientation, values, attitudes tec. this aligns with jeff Hawkins' work More of the continuing evidence that our intentionality, our freedom tothis is a huge issue, but just a thought regarding 'post hoc' - What is the coordinate in reference to which something becomes 'post'? In other words, is there a basis that compells me to tell a particular tale (such as I understand your meaning of rationalisation)? Hello, this is really useful and non-debatable. However, just out of curiosity, I have a small point to understand. Is external stimulation a factor for decision? Or is it programming of brain through previous experience? Just to explain further, a person uses 'left hand' for writing in initial stages and later she is forced to use her 'right hand'. Will this factor in decision process? Do not think the research (which reflects a growing body of similar research) raises any new questions or answers about mind-body, free will etc from the philosophical discourses. It does support the idea of less free will than we may idealise, and Freud etc. Rationalisation is used above as the dual sense of post hoc making sense of and narrating, and the thin conscious level of rational sequencing by symnolic discourse; the latter, in one model, is in constant interaction with bottom-up signals from, which ever way you care to view it, memories, evolutionarily prepared impulses, or electrochemical signals from hippocampus, amygdala, 'limbic system' etc., the whole representing a dynamic no... abailart, to cut my point into a simple sentence, I am questioning the absolute power of linear order in relation to freedom. Simply put, perhaps our freedom lies in what reality we sustain concerning an event, be it pre, post or within? especialy if we take into consideration that a 'time-line' is in itself a random restriction belonging to one 'class' or type of recounting. I am more fascinated by how we form our stories (again - pre, post and within) and what basis we employ to make them real. |
