What's ridiculous? That the mother is up in arms about the school trying to improve the health of the kids? She's probably fat too. Parents who feed their kids til they're so fat that they can't even participate in P.E. without huffing and puffing should have their kids taken away. Now I'm not talking about a little chubby. I'm talking about obese.

Actually, I really don't have an issue with this.. it's more of a wake-up call for the parent.. Your kid is over-weight.

Now, IMO, if they are going to offer this "service" they must also offer solutions... like free after-school programs to help the child learn to eat healthy, exercise, etc.. and/or offer that the school can monitor what the child is eating while at the school.. (shouldn't really be an issue, as schools should ONLY over healthy foods for snacks, lunches, etc...)

How embarrassing for a child. It's hard enough to be overweight, and kids can be cruel. But for this to be advertised on a report card that other kids might see? Complete irresponsibility on the part of the school. That is something that needs to be addressed privately, school to parents.

Ahh, aren't report cards private? Aren't they sent home in sealed envelopes? They are here...

It's not like they'll see the card & then notice a kid is overweight...

The Article said:

On top of that, the school district sent a letter in the mail inviting Taylor -- and 172 other kids with high BMI scores -- to join an exercise program three times of week. It's called the Strong Kids Club and came free to his family, with a promise that "it will be fun."

Kids share their report cards all the time, and put it back in the envelope.

It might have been a good idea to 'take note' and privately alert the kids parents, via telepone call or letter. But it really has no business being on the report card. Kids have all kinds of problems staring them in the face every day...obesity is just one of them. Kids with learning disabilities for instance, don't really need that point made on their report card.

Maybe the school should also think about how report cards are delivered, if that's the problem. In high school, mine always came in the mail.

Schools DO monitor what the children are eating at school until they get to middle school (at least here they do). High schools generally have 'snack bars' where the children can get junk food. These should be cut out.

Also, as part of this plan, I feel that the parents of high BMI children should be offered literature or classes on how to prepare low calorie, healthy meals.

I agree that this could be useful, maybe even essential information for parents and students alike, but I think that it should be delivered in a more personal setting, like maybe in a doctor's office. Also, parents could "opt out" of receiving this kind of personal information if it is to be delivered in a report card

Now, IMO, commenters should read the story before they comment. Then they would know that this is EXACTLY what the school does.

Of course, that would eliminate 90 percent of the comments.
