wildcat says: This will probably become in the coming yrs one of the most heated controversaries we will come across as a species. we do not yet have the philosophy (and by implication ethics) to go with such technological advancements. having said that, the motion is inexorable and we need prepare our arguments. Great comment, Wildcat. I agree. I still think that babies should be a surprise. If you love babies and really want one you will love the baby girl or boy nature gave you. If you love babies and really want one you will love the baby girl or boy nature gave you.Still, if there is a chance for a couple to have a baby that is free from a fatal painful disease, like Huntington's, I can see the appeal. No one wants their child to suffer. In that way I agree bnm. But The boy girl part should be a surprise. This will just be another gap between the rich and poor. Lowly educated poor will more likely support the idea against screening and genetic design because they will be distracted with religion, social pressures, ignorant understandings, and sheeple mentality while the rich will just thumb their noses at the poor and pay to get their kids designed to be smart, strong, healthy, disease resistant, etc. In the end it will only strengthen a society of healthy and strong upper class and a work force of lower class serfs of lower intellect, weaker health, and limited stamina. We fail to take into account that the Earth is also conscious and if humans keep stuffing up the natural balance well, she has to do her thing to re-balance and unfortunately us humans might have to cop it!!! in what fashion is the earth conscious? (unless you refer to the Gaia hypothesis?) and why on earth (pun intended) is it a she? I was wondering that exact same thing, wildcat. In fact, calling the living essence of Earth, Gaia, is quite inaccurate according to fossil records and historic events. The past is rife with the extinction of life and the biodiversity we have now is just a whisper of the vast amounts of life that once lived on the planet. I recall reading somewhere that all the various species on earth today encompass only 1% of all the various species that have existed through the past. Rather being a benevolent planet, Earth is quite an inhospitable planet to life, better matching the darker personality of Medea, Gaia'a dark twin sister who killed her children. A number of recent discoveries have... and why on earth (pun intended) is it a she?Given Oortcloud's last comment, I'm guessing because "they" give all bad things a female persona. hee. well said Oortcloud, and the link is important for whomsoever desires to understand life. @BGM unfortunate, but you are probably correct.. |
