Well before G W starts gloating and patting himself on the back maybe he should remember that, if true, all that has been achieved is to get rid of what was allowed into Iraq only AFTER the invasion. It was the sheer arrogance of G W in his thinking that all the most powerful nation (at the time) on earth had to do was go in, topple Saddam and the rest would cower under the might of the USA. It was this kind of arrogant thinking that led to the "Total Failure" to secure the country and it's borders once it was under the control of the invading force. If true (and that a big if) there sveral factors to consider: a) In Iraq, so called al-Qaeda are but 5% of the insurgency. That still leaves 95% of those attacking the Americans. If anything, they clean up their ranks and granted greater legitimacy to the resistance. b) al-Qaeda goal of dividing the nation is already met. Iraq own politicians can't even agree to talk about unity. Ethnic cleansing has created millions of internally displaced Iraqis (and millions more refugees), so much so that Congress is saying that three quiet Iraqs are better than one big noisy one. c) Wrong war at the wrong place, at the wrong time, for the wrong reasons at the wrong place. Al-Qaeda is centered around... military commanders are declaring victory over al-Qaeda in IraqGood, we won the war -- now bring the troops home. Did you mean: Good, we "won" the war -- now bring the troops home.  Apologies for the redundancy on my part. I hate hearing this good news. Not because I don't welcome it but because with a little time it will prove to be another false dawn. It may be a case of al Quada responding to the loss with an extra subsequent effort by them. It may be that there never was what ever it was that was claimed. It maybe that the casualties are mostly women and children and even the males were innocent too. It may even be Ramadan. I do know that whatever the western media report there is today is turned on its head within a week. So I'll keep my powder dry until I know for sure that there's something to cheer about. Dead of any side don't do a lot for my humour anyway. |
