I guess I'll have to remember this if I ever should marry.

A friend made a very dark joke following a somewhat embarrassing display of ignorance by his wife. "You know, if I had murdered her when it first occurred to me to do so, I'd be out of jail by now." Thankfully, they both have redeeming virtues.

You can add a little anonymity to your searches by using TrackMeNot the FireFox extension. It sends out searches at random so your IP can't be profiled. But really you just want to use the Clear Private Data tool provided by FireFox as well as making sure your IP is dynamic and not static (ie it changes every time you fire up your internet connection) you can do this manually with the command line using ipconfig or any number of IP switchers. You should also use a proxy if you're ever doing anything... clandestine in nature. I recommend a combo of TOR, Privoxy and the FireFox extension FoxyProxy. You could use any number of combinations to keep your searches and your browsing as close to private as possible. Just google it!!

A dynamic IP address won't help you much. They can still find out who was appointed that particular number, at that particular point in time. I know this, because we once went through a barrrage of malicious attack attempts on our PC's and contacted our ISP who did "whatever" and they were able to find the perpetrator, despite his use of dynamic IP's.

How does FoxyProxy secure my privacy?

FoxyProxy does not inherently secure your privacy or anonymize you. FoxyProxy does not change/mask/hide your IP address. Privacy and anonymity are dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to the proxies you use. Please be careful using FoxyProxy if you are expecting complete anonymity because some have argued that FoxyProxy -- when used in patterns mode (identified by the orange FoxyProxy icon and the Use proxies based on their pre-defined patterns and priorities text) -- can actually make you more susceptible to privacy breaches.

i think it's hysterical that the comments above are all about how to 'not be tracked' as if you're all a bunch of murderers!!!

For me it's about privacy and anonymity, not about the hiding of any "criminal activities"

Profiling can be okay, if it helps a search engine deliver the info you want/need, but the exact same info can also be oh so abused by a corrupt organisation or government.

THAT'S my concern. Seeing how the whole so-called War on Terror is being run, I do not find this concern the least bit "hysterical".

OJ Simpson's "I didn't kill my wife; but here's how I would have done it" Fox special clearly outlines not leaving any sort of paper or electronic trail.

ALWAYS go the the public library when looking up stuff like this. Come on, that's Kill your Wife 101! ;-P

Your library records can be subpoenaed too. I have even heard of a case where some perpetrator was caught (I think it was someone who poisoned somebody else) by law enforcement checking their local library's poison books for fingerprints and they found the prints they were looking for in a book that the perpetrator had read on site and hadn't even checked out of the library, so.....busted!! .

Governments and big business have gone to extremes and completely overboard in tracking and monitoring you and your family. Personal behaviour and habits are even being modified. Just knowing that your activities are being recorded can have a chilling effect on ones conduct, speech and reading. (i.e. political dissidents beware!)

An example of unreasonable profiling, is the Automated Targeting System, or ATS, which has 'tagged' millions of innocent people as 'terrorists'. The government shares this ATS information with local, state and other federal agencies and worse, with private businesses and overseas governments. However the traveller is forbidden from seeing their own data and or to c...
