Small talk lightens the chest. We are reassured that others are relaxed enough to talk about themselves, with out needing a prompt. We then feel free to reveal ourselves, and know we will be accepted. In a crowd you can have one trigger question about a subject that is common knowledge (The weather or current affairs.) The the subjects can get into more depth through association., and subject fishing. One of the big problems can be finding a gap in the conversation, when there is something to say. Never underestimate the value of listening. People can say some amazing things when they are drunk. I suppose it helps to have someone you know that you can talk to to help get the ball rolling.
